Helping parents without immigration status get their children into school (CLEO)
The law on this issue is clear. It is against the law for a school to refuse to admit a child who is under 18 years of age because the child or the child’s parent or guardian is in Canada without immigration status. CLEO has produced an online resource for community workers to help them help parents who do not have immigration status register their children for school.

How it works is international students bound for King’s, Brescia, Western or Durham College enrol in CultureWorks (recruited by CultureWorks agents stationed abroad) — at a cost of $4,250 per term. At CultureWorks, they are immersed in English language and also Canadian-studies classes divided by themes, including history, arts and entertainment, sports, First Nations, religion, non-profit volunteering and academic culture. The Canadian studies portion of the program includes weekly field trips and sometimes volunteer missions. “Our goal is to put the students into graduate and undergraduate classes, knowing the things we know, and make them as competitive as possible,” Bax says.

Diversity Represents Biggest Challenge To Graduate Recruitment (Yahoo Finance)
Accountancy firms need to recruit people with a wider range of skills and experiences if they are to thrive, said a panel of leading accountants and academia at a roundtable hosted by The Accountant, the UK’s longest running specialist journal for the accounting profession last month. The group discussed the rising cost of university education, the merits of sponsorship schemes, and challenges in recruitment concluding that one of the biggest issues is diversity and the need to bring different types of people with a variety of experience into the profession. The roundtable meeting, which took place in Central London on 7th July, brought together leading accounting firms PwC, KPMG, and Grant Thornton, educational institutions Durham University, University of Worcester and De Montfort University, and professional bodies the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and BPP, as well as the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.

Immigrant students get help negotiating the maze that is high school (Edmonton Journal)
Now, Woldegabriel is helping fellow students dealing with the challenges he faced as a newcomer. Through a program run jointly by the Edmonton Immigrant Services Association and the city’s public and Catholic school boards, Woldegabriel spent Tuesday imparting some of the wisdom he has learned. The three-day newcomer orientation program helps new immigrant students at St. Joseph Catholic High School and Queen Elizabeth High School learn the ins and outs before classes begin next week. The program, in its second year, is supported by funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Critics decry outsourcing of visa processing (Embassy)
He also raised concerns about sensitive personal information falling into wrong hands, for example if the business running a visa application centre must be licensed by the country in which it operates, and the state security service requires access to the company’s files. NDP immigration critic Don Davies said there are certain government functions that it must do itself, such as adjudicating income tax returns and visa processing. Every deviation from that direct relationship between the government and its client, he argued, raises the potential for risk in dealing with sensitive information such as bank records.

Long wait over as Sudanese orphans join aunt in Winnipeg (Montreal Gazette)
Two orphans in Africa have finally made it to the loving arms of family in Winnipeg. The boys, aged 7 and 13, arrived Monday after they were rescued by their aunt Elizabeth Alija, a refugee from Sudan who’s already raised four kids on her own and two other nephews. “We were kind of lost and didn’t know if it would really happen — if really we were going to come,” said 13-year-old Thomas, who speaks Swahili, Arabic and some English, with his aunt interpreting.

Power against injustices (Strathmore Standard)
Strathmore can learn more about the effects of human trafficking and exploitation at Justice Tapestry, a conference hosted by Hope Community Covenant Church on August 27 and 28. According to organizers, the conference will gather people from across southern Alberta who share a concern for justice in order to empower them both to stand against injustice and to care for the victims of exploitation and abuse.
