The Reluctant Leader: Pushpmit Bhatia (Alejandra Bravo, DiverseCity)
Pushpmit Bhatia was initially hesitant about being identified as a leader by Centre for Information and Community Services (CICS), a Building Blocks partner. Unsure about training others, she has surpassed all expectations. Through the Building Blocks program she offers training on how governments make decisions and how to actively participate in that process. Her goal was to train 60 community members in Markham and Richmond Hill. She has so far trained 128, and has no intention of stopping. Pushpmit, working out of the Welcome Centre in Markham, has shown determination as she finds new ways to engage residents in civic life. She was just waiting to be unleashed on Markham and Richmond Hill!

Durham Region cops bust Roma crime ring (Kevin Connor, Toronto Sun)
A Roma gypsy international crime ring based in Durham Region has been dismantled, police say. Project Mansfield, which began in November 2011 by Durham Regional Police Service, has led to 34 suspects being arrested and 263 charges laid. This is by far the largest investigation of its kind here in Durham Region and I am very proud of our hard working men and women who devoted so much time and energy to this important investigation, said DRPS Chief Const. Mike Ewles. The gypsy cell was recruiting people from Romania to come to Ontario and the investigation has identified over 400 persons associated with this crime organization.

The term visible minority causing concern (Share)
The use of the term visible minority, officially, is probably unique to Canada. I come to this conclusion because, a few years ago, a body of the United Nations, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination CERD), raised the concern about its use by the Canadian government. The majority of other jurisdictions use ethnic minority or simply minority to identify ethnic or racial groups that are comparatively smaller than the majority group.

Alberta & Ontario Rejected Intolerance, Why Did Québec Embrace it? (Rachel Decoste)
Over the last year, the provinces of Ontario (October 2011), Alberta (April 2012) and Québec (September 2012) were called to renew their representatives in their respective provincial legislatures. In all three cases, the electorate’s view of some parties shifted when unpleasant revelations came to light regarding repression of minority groups. Whether it was open disdain for same-sex relationships, immigrants or persons who speak a language other than the majority, political candidates’ slip-ups — some might say the unmasking of their obtuse opinions — caused voters to reassess their allegiance to the associated parties.

Greater ethnic and cultural diversity needed in upper ranks of Windsor police, says inspector (Dalson Chen, Windsor Star)
The upper ranks of Windsor police dont reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of our community, says one of the forces senior officers. I think in the lower ranks of the police service at the constable level were doing pretty good, said Insp. Rick Facciolo, whos in charge of the Human Rights Project at Windsor police. As you start to go up the ranks sergeant, staff sergeant, inspector, and on up the diversity begins to flounder. And we need to take a look at that.

Professor urges further changes to Canadian immigration system (Visabureau)
Speaking at the annual Palmer Conference on immigration at the University of Prince Edward Island, Professor James McNiven, a former provincial minister, says Canada could benefit greatly by essentially opening the doors to a greater range of potential migrants. “We need old fashioned immigrants who come with minimal skills and lots of drive,” said the professor, claiming that the aging Canadian population and declining birth rate means the country will be in greater need of labour far more than it is of skilled professionals in the near future.

The third term at play here is immigration policy-which, as I wish to show through consideration of our governing classs current treatment of one immigrant minority, Canadas Muslim community, and also one current aspect of its treatment of that other minority whose members are neither immigrants nor the descendants of immigrants, but aboriginal, appears to have been seriously deformed by a determination to convince the Canadian population of the rightness and necessity of our participation in George W. Immigrants choosing Canada for its education (Sameer Vasta, Coffee Talk)
Yesterday, millions of children across Canada went back to school. According to Statistics Canada, about 10 percent of them weren’t born in this country. An article in the Globe and Mail two days ago tried to tease out the reasons why many educated immigrants choose to come to Canada, and why immigrant children in Canada outperform immigrant children in other countries when it comes to education. While the article didn’t quite answer the question of why immigrants choose Canada and why their children perform well here, it did bring up some good discussion about our education system and our immigration system, and the intersection between the two.

Joy for Somalian refugee after tracking down lost daughter (Greg Burns, Fullham Chronicle)
A SOMALIAN refugee has spoken of his battle to be reunited with his family after being forced to leave his homeland. Muhammed Saciid Xaajis Diiriye left war-torn Somalia in 1996 after being shot in a roadside ambush as civil-war gripped the country. His journey took him through Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa before he was detained at Heathrow Airport as he attempted to fly to Canada to join his cousin.

Working on the edge: 47% of workers live paycheque to paycheque (Workers’ Action Centre)
When 47% of workers live paycheque to paycheque, the impacts of wage theft can be devastating. A new survey by the Canadian Payroll Association found that almost half of those surveyed would be in financial difficulty if their pay cheque was delayed by even one week. Ontario had one of the highest percentages of workers working on the edge 52% of those surveyed in Ontario said they would face difficulties if their pay was late.

Program Trains Recent Canadian Immigrants for Oil and Gas Jobs (CICSNews)
Canadas shortage of workers with the skills needed to service its oil and gas industry and the higher than average unemployment rate of recent immigrants are both being addressed by a new Alberta program that provides oil drilling training for recent immigrants to help them get jobs in the provinces oil-patch. The Oil and Gas Training Program (OGTP) was created by the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society which administers it jointly with Enform, a Western Canadian oil and gas safety association created by major upstream oil and gas companies.
