Welcome to Canada, kinda…

When I watched the new CIC “Your First Two Weeks in Canada” video, I found myself imagining a new voice over early on.

friendlyneighbourhoodCBSAofficer“Behold the non-smiling skeptical CBSA officer in paramilitary gear, who’s wondering why you’re here and how you plan to screw our country over.”

Heck the actual voice over isn’t even that far from it – another great example of Canada’s welcoming government national security/criminal-assumption ethos: “They help to ensure your smooth arrival, and protect the integrity of Canada’s customs, immigration and agricultural laws.”

I’ve always found the CBSA uniform distasteful and problematic as a first glance of Canadian officials for either visitors of newcomers. I’ve travelled a fair bit and haven’t experience nearly as unwelcoming a face as when I return to Canada. You can totally feel the anxiety displayed by the couple dealing with the CBSA agent, and they’re acting in a promotional video!

But, I had to laugh out loud about at about the 5:50 mark in the video. It’s about banking. And, interestingly, the only (only) organization’s logo suddenly blurred out is the obvious RBC logo (if you’re wondering if it’s just a corporate logo thing, keep watching. McDonald’s & Swiss Chalet make an appearance around 7:23).

Hmmm, I wonder why that is? 🙂

Other than all that, the video misses the opportunity to make a few more points, and I think the language could have been clearer and less jargony in some sections. But, overall, decent.

Watch and enjoy.
